Most education programs for Licensed Mental Health Therapists, Licensed Social Workers and Licensed Marriage and Family Counselors do not specifically address either the legal requirements nor the best practices for caring for clients involved in Domestic Violence (DV). This course provides a thorough understanding of Domestic Violence Intervention, with an emphasis on avoiding common mistakes made by therapists who have not been trained to provide this care. DV is very common among those who seek treatment, and with this targeted seminar, most clients can be safely treated by the LMHC, LMFC, or LSW.

Participants completing this course will be able to answer the following questions.

  • What is Domestic Violence (DV)?
  • Is DV a crime? if not, what is it?
  • How does it relate to mental health and marriage and family counseling?
  • Why are most Licensed Mental Health Counselors (LMHC) and Licensed Marriage and Family Counselors (LMFC) not qualified to do domestic violence treatment?
  • What can we do about it?
  • What are the different typologies of DV?
  • What is happening to clients stigmatized with the DV label?
  • What role(s) does the victim play in DV?
  • What topics should be covered in DV treatment?
  • Why is group therapy preferred?
  • Why conduct gender-specific groups?
  • What are the limitations of gender-specific groups?
  • What are the inherent risks in couples counseling?
  • Why do we need to label participants as victim or perpetrator?
  • Why do we need to stop using these negative labels and start focusing on identifying and treating needs?
  • What role or roles should the DV (victim) advocates play in the treatment of DV perpetrators?
  • What role(s) does the victim play in DV?
  • What role does projection (transference and countertransference) play in the treatment of DV perpetrators and victims?
  • Why do we need to build a support system for working in the field of DV?
  • When do I need to refer to a specialist?
  • Why DV treatment should be under the Department of Health (DOH) instead of the Department of Children, Youth and Family Services (DCYF)
  • Why DV treatment should have a special certification for LMHCs and LMFCs
  • Why you should recommend a special certification to organizations representing licensed mental health counselors, licensed marriage and family counselors and social workers
